So from that great stat to the show the rest of the show followed in the same manner: Picola went clear in her x-country and show-jumping and came 6th. Candy did the individual show hunter and won that too! Picola also went clear in most of her jumping competitions and was in the winning CD (80cm) team. Candy also came 3rd in the intermediate equitation, 3rd in the individual show riding and from her brilliant dressage scores qualified for the individual dressage champs and came 6th out of more than 100 ponies. Then in the dressage team competition, Candy also behaved and did a really nice test and WP came 4th.

After Candy’s great performances everyone wanted to but her… so I sold her to a very good little rider from Gauteng. So our journey home was extremely sad and lots of tears were shed. But it was the best show I have ever been to and I couldn’t have asked for any more from either of my ponies!

A reminder to all thast school opens on Tuesday 13 July. The uniform shop will be open on Monday 12 July from 9:00 to 14:00.

Despite the stormy weather on 12 May 2010, year 1 L boarded a bus set for Butterfly World.
However due to the warm and sunny children the weather had to change and the sun came out along with many butterflies.
The children first enjoyed a short slide show in a classroom, where they learnt about the various animals they were about to meet. We then went to another room which was filled with spiders and all sorts of creepy crawlies. Luckily for us they were behind glass as I’m not sure how confident we would have felt being face to face with these fury friends. We did however get to meet a corn snake and enjoyed passing him around.

While walking around in the gardens you couldn’t help but feel like you were in an enchanted land surrounded by butterflies and creatures everywhere that you looked. The butterflies landed all over us and we had to be careful not to take these little hitch hikers home with us by accident. We also held iguanas, and saw monkeys, duikers, squirrels, frogs and many different kinds of birds to name but a few of the animals.

It was hard to entice the children to leave as they loved every second of their trip and didn’t look forward to heading back to class. I must say in my four years of being with the International School I have never been with such a well behaved group of children and I thank my year ones for making me so proud of my little munchkins walking around in their smart uniforms. On Friday, 12th March 2010 Year 3C and Year 3D visited Kirstenbosch Gardens to learn more about their Science topic ‘Helping Plants Grow’.

When we arrived at Kirstenbosch we had a small snack in a garden and then two guides came to collect us.

Each class went off to learn more about plants. The children learnt a lot about different types of plants such as Erica, Protea, Pelargonium, Buchu and Restia. The children had to work in pairs and were given a piece of a plant. They had to search for their plant in the garden. Then they completed a worksheet about their plant. Next the children were given colour cards and they had to find flowers/plants with a similar colour. They then had to draw and colour the plant to match the plant in the garden.

We also walked into the Braille forest. This was very exciting as the kids had to close their eyes and walk into the forest while holding onto a rope. As they walked they stopped at each Braille plaque to experience what it feels like for blind people to read Braille.

The outing to Kirstenbosch was really exciting and educational!

Recently we went on our outing to Spier. I was in such a hurry in the morning that I got to school at 7.20am. We left school at 8.30am. After what felt like a whole day, we got to Spier. I was so excited.

Firstly we went to see the birds of prey and watched a bird show. They used a Yellow-billed Kite, a Barn Owl and then a Spotted Eagle-owl and I held the Barn Owl. After that we got to have a wonder around to look at the birds. There were lots of them. My favourite was Mick the Black Eagle and the African Fish Eagle who had grown since I last met him. The owls were very soft when we touched them. I really enjoyed the birds.

After the birds it was time to go to the cheetahs. A lady called Mary took us to a classroom and told us a bit about cheetahs. Then we went to look at the cheetahs. My favourite one was Joseph. We also saw meerkats and a puma. It was such a great outing and I hope our next one is just as much fun.

On the 3rd February Year 1D went to the aquarium. They saw lots of different animals in their natural habitat and learnt a lot about how different animals eat. They had a lot of fun with their friends as they explored the magical world that lies beneath the sea. Here are their own written pieces about what they saw at the two oceans aquarium.
